Gillian moved back to Edinburgh in 2006 after living in London for 20 years, where she worked as an administrator for a domestic recruitment company. On her arrival in Edinburgh she worked as a temp administrator for the NHS then left to have a baby girl in December 2006.

She joined Edinburgh City Centre Management in February 2008 then moved over to Essential Edinburgh when it was established in July 2008.
