Literary Tour

Edinburgh has been the home of many well respected and popular writers such as Robert Louis Stevenson, Sir Walter Scott, Robert Burns, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and Robert Fergusson; along with contemporary authors such as JK Rowling, Ian Rankin, Irvine Welsh and Alexander McCall Smith. Because of our literary heritage Edinburgh has been nominated as the UNESCO City of Literature.

To celebrate Edinburgh’s literary history Essential Edinburgh and the City of Literature have teamed up to create the Poetry Garden in St Andrew Square Garden.

As well as the yearly Edinburgh International Book Festival in Charlotte Square there are also various organised tours that take you around the literary highlights:
