BID Scotland Award Essential Edinburgh Official Accreditation

Essential Edinburgh – the company which runs the city centre Business Improvement District – has received a timely thumbs-up for the quality of its work.

BIDs Scotland, which oversees Business Improvement District processes north of the border, has awarded the Capital BID its official accreditation – meaning all of Essential Edinburgh’s key work is deemed to be of a high quality, making a genuine impact in the city.

The five-yearly renewal process is underway, with city centre businesses now casting their votes. In 2013, Essential Edinburgh was returned for a further five-year term with overwhelming approval from the eligible city centre businesses.

Roddy Smith, Chief Executive of Essential Edinburgh, said: “The accreditation involves a pretty stringent process, and an independent report, and I am delighted that Essential Edinburgh has come out of it well across all of our core areas of work.

“We have listened to our 600 levy-paying businesses, and we believe we’ve put together an exciting business plan to help further enhance and improve the performance of our amazing city centre over the next five years, as the business community continues to put its money where its mouth is and to invest more than £1 million per year.”

Stephen Duncan, Director of BIDs Scotland and Director of Commercial and Tourism, Historic Environment Scotland said:

“I was very pleased to be able to award Essential Edinburgh with their Scottish Interim Review Certificate in Edinburgh.

“The Interim Review is a bespoke accreditation that recognises and accords with the BIDs Scotland legislation and the public and private political and social landscape in Scotland.

“The review, developed after consultation with key stakeholders and organisations, UK national businesses and the Scottish Retail Consortium supplies an audit trail to support any future evaluation of Essential Edinburgh and gives confidence to the levy payers and the Board of Directors that the practices of the BID Company are robust and accord with good practice.

“I would like to give my congratulations to Essential Edinburgh for achieving a high standard of operation and wish them well with their forthcoming renewal ballot.”
